With age, your skin experiences a decline in collagen production, leading to those dreaded signs of aging we are all familiar with. Lines and wrinkles can be an unsightly reminder of your age, leaving you feeling self-conscious about how you look.
Fractional Tixel treatments provide a wide range of benefits and are diverse in the skin conditions that can be treated.
The Fractional system works by delivering precise amounts of thermal energy to the skin’s surface. The thermal energy penetrates the epidermal layer of the skin, where it stimulates collagen production. The result is a tighter, smoother appearance.
The device used to treat the skin contains 81 tiny pyramid shaped cones on a metallic plate that are heated to deliver controlled thermal energy to the surface of the skin, leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. That heat up to 400°C. When it briefly touches the skin the thermal energy is transferred to the skin creating tiny holes. This is micro damage that stimulates the new collagen production. Collagen is stimulated to restore the structure of the skin to a more youthful state, smoothing out wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars.
Treatment is well tolerated, and a warm sensation is felt on the facial skin; however, there is minimal discomfort or pain.
Unique delivery of thermal energy provides comparable results to more invasive procedures, with much less downtime and side effects. Often, patients will feel a sunburnt feeling hours after treatment; however, this quickly subsides.
Because of the gentle nature of the procedure, treatments can be carried out more frequently, with a series of 3-6 sessions recommended. Compared to other skin resurfacing treatments with extensive recovery such as laser resurfacing, Fractional achieves similar anti-aging improvements. The treatment precisely targets the top layer of the skin only, leaving the surrounding tissue intact, and a skin tightening effect is achieved for a youthful appearance. This is effective and safe to use on all skin tones, including darker skin types.
Anyone who is experiencing skin problems such as acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, rosacea or other concerns about skin tone and texture could be a suitable candidate for Fractional treatment.
A consultation with a practitioner can help you determine what level of treatment might be right for you.
You will be asked to arrive at your appointment with no fake tan and no make up on the area to be treated.
You will have an initial consultation in which your practitioner may recommend some skin preparation for 2-4 weeks beforehand, depending on your skin type.
You will arrive 40 minutes prior to your appointment so that the topical anaesthetic can be applied. You may also need to shave the treatment area.
During the procedure, you will feel a warm sensation when the device is applied to your skin.
A serum may be applied immediately after treatment to relieve the warm sensation on the skin. Some redness and warmth is normal in the days following the treatment. Swelling can also occur, especially around the eye area. These symptoms will subside within a few days. The skin’s surface may then appear dry and flaky as it begins to heal.
You should make sure the treated area is kept clean and dry for 6 hours after the procedure – avoid touching, scratching or washing it.
For 24 hours after treatment you should avoid swimming, strenuous physical activity and saunas. You should also wait until the next day before applying skincare or makeup.
Your skin may feel sensitive and warm for a few days after treatment as if you’ve been in the sun. Mild swelling and redness are common for 2-3 days after treatment.
After this, your skin may begin to scab over. It is important that you do not scratch or pick at it so that you don’t cause an infection or scarring.
Fractional may cause redness and swelling in some people, especially in areas where the skin is thinner ie. around the eyes. Whilst most redness and swelling subsides in a few days, it can last longer in some people.
The number of treatments you need will depend on your individual needs. More severe skin conditions may require more treatments. Your practitioner will discuss this with you in your initial consultation.
A course of 3-6 treatments spaced one month apart is generally recommended. Regular maintenance will be required after that with a treatment every 6-12 months.
There may be a feeling of heat, similar to sunburn, during the treatment. Most patients find it uncomfortable but tolerable. A topical anaesthetic cream will be used to reduce any discomfort.
The downtime following the procedure is usually a few days but may last longer if your skin is sensitive or reactive.
